Quiet, by default.

SoloCook is a cooking app that works almost entirely on your phone. This page explains, in plain English, what it stores, what it sends, and what it never does.

No account. No analytics. No ads. No tracking. Your pantry, streak and saved recipes stay on your phone. The only thing that can leave it is a fridge photo you choose to scan, and that photo is read and then thrown away.

What the app stores on your phone

Everything SoloCook remembers about you lives in your phone's own app storage:

  • the first name you type (or "Chef" if you skip it),
  • the ingredients, appliances, cuisines and dislikes you pick,
  • meals cooked, your streak, and the money-saved total,
  • recipes you bookmark, and your light or dark mode choice.

None of this is sent to us or anyone else. It isn't backed up to our servers because we don't have any that hold user data. Deleting the app deletes it all, and we can't recover it because we never had a copy.

The money-saved total is worked out on your phone from how many meals you've cooked, using your phone's region setting to pick the currency and a typical local delivery order. Your region setting isn't sent anywhere.

Network requests the app makes

To show recipe photos and some extra recipes, the app makes ordinary, anonymous web requests. None of them include your name, a user ID, your location or anything you've entered:

  • SoloCook's image service, a small server we run on Cloudflare, which looks up a photo for a recipe. It receives the recipe's name and cuisine.
  • TheMealDB (themealdb.com), a public recipe catalogue, which receives the cuisine being browsed.
  • Wikimedia Commons and Unsplash, which serve some dish photos.

Like any website, these services see the standard information every web request carries, such as an IP address, for the time it takes to answer. We don't combine it with anything, and we don't log it for our own use.

Fridge Scan (optional)

Fridge Scan reads a photo of your open fridge and suggests which ingredients to tick. It's the one feature that sends something you made off your phone, so here is exactly what happens:

  • When it runs: only after you've read the notice in the app and tapped Continue, and only when you take or pick a photo. Everything else in SoloCook works without it.
  • What's sent: the photo, reduced in size, plus a random scan code created on your phone. Nothing else: not your name, pantry or location.
  • Where it goes: to SoloCook's server on Cloudflare, which passes it to an AI vision model on Cloudflare Workers AI to recognise the food.
  • How long it's kept: the photo is processed in memory and discarded when the answer comes back. It isn't stored, logged, looked at by a person, or used to train any model.
  • The scan code: is used only to count scans, so each phone gets a fair share of the free daily allowance. The count expires after about a day. The code isn't linked to you or your device's identifiers.

You always confirm the suggested list before anything is added. The camera and photo library are used only for Fridge Scan, and only when you ask. Cloudflare processes these photos on our behalf; see Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Voice entry

Adding ingredients by voice uses your phone's built-in speech recognition, running on the phone itself. Audio never leaves your phone. If your phone can't recognise speech on-device, the feature turns itself off rather than sending audio anywhere.

What we never do

  • No analytics or tracking tools (no Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude or similar).
  • No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
  • No selling, renting or sharing of data.
  • No accounts, logins, passwords or email collection.
  • No location tracking, and no access to your contacts or calendar.
  • No push notifications.

Your choices

Because your data stays on your phone, you're in control of it directly:

  • Delete it: use You › Reset everything in the app, or delete the app.
  • Stop photo uploads: just don't use Fridge Scan, or turn off camera and photo access for SoloCook in your phone's settings.
  • Ask us anything: we hold no personal data about you, but you're welcome to ask. We'll reply within 30 days.

These rights apply wherever you live, including under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and California privacy law.

Children

SoloCook is rated 4+. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The only thing anyone can send us is a Fridge Scan photo, and we don't keep it.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of SoloCook sends anything new, this page will be updated first, and the feature will be optional and explained in the app before it does anything.
